I'm the 28 yr old mother of an 11 year old...I'm a full time insurance agent, but I'd love to get my degree....B.A in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. I can't go to a college campus because I work full time and live far away from my family (no baby sitters) ... My fiance is a State Trooper and his schedule is always crazy so, I thought online would be the way to go....what do you think?? Should I even be thinking about getting a degree?? Do I need it?? What will my home life be like?? Ahhhh...so many questions! LOL! HELP!!!!
What's your experience with online colleges??
Your situation is exactly why people are getting degrees online. I would definitely agree with the first answerer, make sure you check out the accreditations. Accreditations do matter. I attend Capella University, getting my Masters in Mental Health Counseling. Going to school online is a great option but you have to be VERY disciplined. Online universities have the highest drop-out rate than any brick and mortar school, because people get really relaxed and actually forget they are in school, or they are not focused. Some online colleges are a bit pricey, but comes at a great investment in your career and experience. Your career is worth it and of course your family is also. Great degree programs at accredited and reputable online colleges, Walden Univ., Univ. of Phoenix, Caplla Univ., Western Governors University.....
Should you be thinking about a degree? Well it's proven that those with Bachelor degrees make four times as much as those with High School diplomas in their lifetime....so if you think that you are worth it, honey go for it. You definitely deserve it. Why not? Your home life? You definitely want to stick to a realistic schedule to set aside time for studying, reading, completing assignments, and of course family things. Get a balance, if you are not organized, then it's time to develop that characteristic. The beauty of online learning is that you can be logged on at 2 a.m, studying your heart out, but again, discipline is the key.
But you can do this, as more and more professional individuals are seeking to get back in the learning game, it's harder to go and sit in a class for 2-3 nights or during the day. You will hopefully have a great experience with online learning, I wish you the best....! And believe it or not, employers are recognizing the efforts and difficulty of online programs, so as a result, the reputation of online universities are definitely more positive than it was 7 or 8 years ago. So a B.A in Business could see much outlook in Human Resources, Finance, Sales, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Marketing, etc. I pray that doors open for you, best wishes on getting that degree!
Reply:First of all, before enrolling in any on-line university, make sure that it is accredited and not just a diploma mill. Having said that, I'll share that I received my graduate degree from an on-line university. They advertised that students could complete their degrees in 18 months in their spare time. Well....
What they did not say was that it would take every moment of spare time. It was and arduous process. I did complete my degree in 18 months but saw little of my husband in that time.
The learning curve at the beginning (getting used to the on-line format and requirements) was very steep. Working in teams in an asynchronous format was at times extremely challenging.
Having said all that, I learned more than I ever thought I could. I'm glad that I did it. I knew it would not be easy, but the stress it put on me did take me by surprise.
I, too, was working full time. You CAN do it. But recognize that it is every bit as time consuming as going to classes. The real advantage is that you can pick the times instead of having to sit in a class at a specified time.
Best of luck on this.
