How to go about selling a small business?

I would love some advice on how to begin the process of selling a small business. I have a client base at this point, but am not sure I have the funds remaining to keep going. Should I research using a broker or go about it using some of the more inexpensive ways such as listing it for sale online? Thanks!

Reply:It's no different than selling any other product. You have to show "value" to your customer. Insofar as marketing the sale, there are quite a few options, a lot depends on whether "real property" is involved, if so, you may want to hire a broker, if not, simply determine the market value, and put a for sale sign on it. You can advertise just about anywhere.
Reply:See who the most active business brokerage is (check the claisfied) and choose the best one. The broker will know how to "package" your business 4 sale and he has experience in what investors are looking for. He will also valuate your business so you will know how much your business is worth.

Hint: The biggest thing you can do to help sell your business is an accurate set of books...

Good Luck...
