Do you think online translators work?

So, maybe you think that online translators work? Certainly the closer two languages are, the better the results, but here is a small portion of a Japanese website translated using a very popular and up-to-date translation service online:





"Darkness money like it puts out to that. If the subscriber good intention absolute however perhaps, it is saved, knowing circumstance, that business it raised fund, when it becomes, don't you think? it is the lith key."





Remember this next time you translate something and post as if you are actually providing anyone an answer.

Just thought I'd share a link my brother sent me one day. It's taken to the extreme, but I think to some extent it shows the unreliability of online translators.

Try it out. Mostly it spits out gibberish, but every once in a while you'll get an absolutely hilarious translation.

Reply:Yes they work, on simple sentences, but if sentences are more complex or relate to metaphors or concepts it is difficult.





Languages haves colloquial expressions "It rains cats and dogs" = in french "Il tombe des hallebardes/Halberds are falling".





Are cats and dogs falling from the clouds? Are Halberds falling from the sky..?
Reply:They do, sometimes. But you have to know a little of the language to ensure that it is correct. And to translate back to see if what you just translated makes any sense when translated back.
Reply:they do if you speak perfectly but if you use slang then it'll almost always come out wrong... also, you need to account for the fact that some words do not translate directly into different languages and will give you a word that is close, albeit sometimes incorrect, but what the translator thinks is right.
Reply:Only in in single words, but not in sentences.
