Im trying to start a small business...?
James,

I would only use a free web host under the circumstances that my professional website was under construction. Just as others have stated it is better to have your own domain rather than a piggy back URL. Also the free websites scream out AMATEUR and they are difficult to generate traffic without paying for advertising and pay per click costs. I found a web host that provides all the tools and will assist through each step of building a website so you will be positioned in front of your target marked and avoid the high costs of advertising. If you can build a website that will get natural keyword search traffic your visitors will be more targeted and pre-sold on what you have to offer. The whole system from the assistance in designing, building to the maintaining of my site has cost me less than $1 per day. You can find a web host that will suit your needs. If you want to know more about the one that I chose and see a great example, feel free to send me a message with any questions. You can also read more in my Yahoo Answers Profile page. I hope this has helped.

Reply:A few points that may help:

1) Having your own domain name e.g. www.yourcompany.com is always more credible than piggybacking on someone else's domain.

2) Host on a domain that provides you with an email domain as well e.g. yourid@yourcompany.com

3) Go for a hosting service that is reliable with both your website and email... last thing a potential customer wants to see is a "page not found" error because your hosting provider is erratic in service levels.

4) I use yahoo webhosting for small business; they host my website and the it also neatly ties my professional /company email account into my existing yahoo email account; so I have my business email coexisting with my personal yahoo email id; I just loginto yahoo mail froom anywhere and check both my company and personal mail.

5) yahoo is extremely reliable and charges just $11.50/month for the service and provides all the tools to manage my website. Never had any issues in the 2 years I've been with them. Had tons of problems when I was hosting with a Micky Mouse hosting service. Also I don't like the idea of my mail service being handled by a small time hosting service.

Good luck in your venture.

Reply:Hi. I got hooked up with a site that gave me a preloaded website - over 3000 items. I've been extremely happy with it and it has cost me just a tad over $100 to get it started. I have the option of selling the items at online auctions and having them dropshipped to the customer as well as the customer visiting the website and purchasing from there. Check it out at www.zombiedeals.com. On the left side, look for "own you own business" and click on that - it will give you lots of information. If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to attempt an answer.
Reply:If what you are selling is handmade and it sounds like it is, look at ETSY.com

It's a great site for handmade things! It's also a great place to get advice.

If you are not going to be selling anything on your site yet, you may want to hold off on getting one and focus more on word of mouth, leave behinds and getting your furniture into small mom and pop stores. You can still your the internet as a tool, make a myspace page, flickr, and start a blog! All 3 are great traffic and you can place photos, descriptions and contact info on all...

If you have more questions feel free to contact me by email. I have 3 small business that I am getting off the ground. One is home decor that I design and make, a graphic design business and wedding flowers/invitations. So I have some knowledge about it. Good luck!
Reply:James,

The free websites may be fine for personal use. However, they have drawbacks when it comes to business sites. That's because when you use a free site host, you have to allow them to place ads on your site and you have no control over how many or where these ads are posted.

There is an excellent site builder that is easy to use, has excellent customer service and reasonable rates ( from what you describe, you would probably just need the basic site which is $9.95 a month). I have 2 websites I have built with them and when I started I only knew how to email, copy and paste! It is a very small price to pay to have complete control over your own website and not have to run visitors away because of the ads. Believ it or not, many people will back out of a site if it opens up and has ads all over the page. Not only that but all the ads take focus away from your business that you are trying to advertise.

You can go to http://www.siterightnow.com and look at the different plans that they offer. I am sure you will be as satisfied as I have been for almost 2 years. Hope this helps!

Just to add a couple of points... you receive your own email account with your site (up to 30 I think). Also, in the 2 years I have been with them I have never had the server to be down so that area has been 100% satisfactory as well.
Reply:You can get a great deal on your own domain (website address with emails) and web hosting for your own business.

Just go here to get your own personal name: http://www.ezinfocenter.com/7893080/Item...

As far as getting a bunch of products to sell on the website... You can get those too for FREE here:

http://www.ezinfocenter.com/7893080/FREE

And about your furniture business - Do you want more customers to sell to? I know of a COOL website that you can create online coupons for your targeted soon-to-be customers. Furniture dicounts or specials to drive customers your way! Right to your store where you do business! Businesses advertise there FREE and ONLY pay for actual coupons turned in - You cannot lose with this advertising situation.

No sales = NO CHARGE FROM THEM.

Here is that website adress:

I hope this helps,
