I recently became aware that people can see that I'm invisible (but actually online) in YM by going to their contacts list and looking at the smiley next to my name. Is there a way to block that? There are some people who simply don't respect that I work from home and use YM to communicate with biz associates. I remain inviz to them during business hours, so they'll let me work. But now one of them has figured out how to find out if I'm actually online, and he's bugging me even though I'm inviz on his friends list.
How can I hide my online status even in Yahoo! mail contacts.?
Your chat availability appears at the top of the page, next to your ID. You’ll see Offline next to a sleeping gray face if you haven’t signed into chat yet. Click Offline (or whatever you see there next to your ID) to open a pull-down menu where you can select a different availability.
Your chat availability remains the same over multiple Yahoo! Mail sessions until you make a change to it – so if you choose Available you’ll continue to pop up as Available to others the next time you sign in.
Anytime you’re signed out of Mail, you are also signed out of chat.
These are the basic availability choices:
Available – Other Yahoo! contacts see you as Online/Available for Chat.
Busy – This indicates you’re online, but that you don’t want to be disturbed.
Invisible – You’re online, but you’d rather not let anybody know. You look offline to everyone but you can still start a chat if you want.
Sign out of Chat – When you sign out, people see the same thing they see when you’re “Invisible”: your face-icon is gray and sleeping.
Write your own status
You can also write your own status message after either Available or Busy. For example, you could select Busy and write “crunch time!”
Here’s how to add your own status:
1. Click your current status at the top of the page. It’s next to your ID. This opens a pull-down menu.
2. Select Custom Status Message.*
3. After “Appear as”, select Available or Busy.
4. In the box after “Your Message”, add the text you want.
5. Click OK. Done!
* Yahoo! Mail will keep the 5 most recent custom status messages you compose, so that you can select them easily and quickly from the pull-down menu later.
*Not seeing Custom Status Message in the pull-down menu? Activate chat first – set your status to Available. Then start at step 1.
Yahoo! Messenger desktop application users: If we detect that you’re already signed into Messenger, we'll just quietly not sign you into chat – we don't want to interrupt what you’re already doing. Of course, you can always change your status from the menu. Signing into chat will sign you out of Messenger.
Reply:Thanks. I was talking about Yahoo Mail Contacts list. I've already set Yahoo Messenger up correctly. But apparently I missed something that keeps me from being visible to people who click on the MAIL contacts list. Report It
Reply:Hot T, THANKS!!! That did it! Thanks for the help. Report It

Reply:Hi There, I had exactly your same problem but for a different reason. Here is what you need to do.
1. Open your account settings, you will need to enter your password for this.
2. On the right side of your screen there is a link that says Public Profiles with your screen name and below that it says Edit/Create Profiles. Click that Edit/Create Profiles link.
3. Now in the middle of the page will be a large rectangular white box. It's a little hard to miss it. It says "Your Yahoo! Mail account is:" and your screen name. below this is a box. You will just need to check that box to hide your online status.
4. To complete the process be sure that you click the box that says Finished Editing.
This will do exactly what you need it to do. Have a good day.
