I'm starting a homemade cookie business in my home, and i was wondering if there are people that are wanting to buy homemade cookies online, or if it's just a silly idea.
Opening up a cookie business?
It is a silly idea ,, but it's also called a niche. DO IT NONTHELESS !!
I say , you go sell to your local area , via 1 or 2 shops and the market , and create something that looks like business volume. Unfortunately , at this level of the game ,, it is only good to substitute your equivalent "salary".
I would say you start by free -Samples to your neighbourhood sundry and convenience shops , telling him that , "you are just pondering the idea if this stuff can sell". Be generous and get them to talk. You will know the sentiments and the "backdrop" of your game. (Get a feel of local geography ,, that's subsequent logistics.) Say , you haven't decided ,, and don't rush.
Once you have created local volume (don't be greedy here , or you may be over exposed) ,, the internet may allow you to find business as a contract baker for catering business ,, or you may dedicate to supply hotels. Try not to sell direct yourself ,, but tie up with businesses.
Either way , you will have to deal with the Health Department ,, and if you are branding later ,, you will also need advise on food safety laws. Most entreprenuers go up to the point , then worry about the legal issues ,, always remember that if your business is worth it ,, you won't mind the summons. Worrying kills the business prematurely.
,, along the way you will find that the cost of raw materials is prohibitive. And the TRICK is , that if you have no volume ,, you cannot meet the industrial bakery supplier's MOQ(Minimum Order Quantity) ,, and that without him ,, your material cost is just too d_a_r_n high !!
,, and the good part is ,, if you are not happy with the sundry flour ,, you can buy industrial gluten to match the good old flours ! He's got lots of gums and carrageenans , and stuffs that can make a wizard of a baker of YOU ! You will also be modifying the flour with specialty starches.
,, Your oven is also an issue that can make or break your business. This is a tricky one , because I do not know your operating domain.
,, from here I think you may re-think the internet channel , afterall.
Reply:it's definitely possible but I'd say they have to be unique in some way to get people to bite online

Reply:You can sell food online however it would need to be special and not very perishable. It's usually best to sell food to local sources.
I know a woman who started a local cookie business. She rented a kitchen from her church that was approved by the health dept. and sold her cookies through several local convenience stores and restaurants. She delivered to them about 1 - 2 times a week and they paid her an agreed upon portion of the sales. She knew how much she sold based on her counts when she made at her deliveries.
However before you think about selling any food to stores or online check with your local city/county health dept. Any food business is subject to certain laws and regulations.
My advice would be to locate your local SBDC office for free business counseling. (Link below)
Whatever you do good luck!!
Reply:It's a pretty silly idea because the cookies will get stale by the time people get them. Sorry, try again!!!
